How To Battle Breakouts / The Trio

best products to battle breakouts

Struggling with breakouts is the very thing that affects my confidence, and not in a good way. Now luckily, I do not suffer from major skin problems but I do get the occasional spots and they still manage to put me down a bit. Trying to improve the condition of my skin as much as I can with the time I have discovered a few ways that help it look beautiful and stay as clear as possible. Obviously, I am no expert but if I could give you some basic advice on how to prevent your skin from breaking out I would say you should:

One – try eat healthier and exercise on a regular basic. I am not the best at the latter *shamefully hides in the corner* but I’ve noticed that when I hit the gym or go for a run my skin looks ten times better. Two – drink a lot of water. End of – no excuses here! If you want your skin to be happy, you need to stay hydrated. Force yourself to drink at least 2.2 liters a day and come thank me later :) Three – do not pick at your spots! Trust me I know how hard it is to resist but please try and let them go on their own terms. Otherwise you risk ending up with torn, irritated skin and bacteria all over your face. Oh and let’s not forget about the horrible acne scaring that take months to recover! Four – double cleanse. I will put it that way – do not go to bed with makeup on and always make sure you go over your face twice. Invest in a good cleanser and use it. In the morning too by the way – it still baffles me how some people don’t cleanse in the morning but I would definitely consider it if I were you.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, I should mention that even though I am doing my best to prevent dealing with breakouts, apparently they are inevitable, especially if my hormones are acting up. We’ve all been there and it’s not the coolest experience but luckily I did find some brilliant products that always help me fight the problem areas. Without further ado, let’s go talk skincare!

Every time I sense a spot coming up I do two things – remove my makeup as soon as I can and give my skin a good double cleanse to remove all dirt and let my skin breath. Then the star of the show comes in –my trusty GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Mask (here). I know this one may break the bank but I am a firm believer that if you spend your money on something it should be skincare. Now the great thing about this miracle in a pot is that it could be used both all over the face as a weekly detox mask or as spot treatment. Needless to say that this is exactly what I do when my skin is acting up – I just put a small amount on top of the affected area, leave it on for about 15 minutes and then gently rinse it off. Thanks to the Salicylic Acid and all the other powerful ingredients in Supermud it actually manages to calm down the redness, to significantly reduce the size of the spot and to pretty much heal it completely. I have no idea what the magic behind this godsend gem is but it literally works wonders. It soothes, it decongests, it just does it all and if you fancy reading my full tale about it click here.

After I’m done with the mask, I go all over my face with a toner and then the exciting part kicks in - using face oil. And not any face oil but my Holy Grail Clarins Blue Orchid Treatment Face Oil (here). When it comes to perfect skin in a bottle I always look this way. This is one of those products that do it all with just three little drops twice a week and I especially love using it when my skin is breaking out. This oil does a brilliant job at soothing and smoothing the skin, injecting moisture into it and making it firm and supple. The list of awesomeness continues with its incredible ‘blemish reducing’ properties and the fact that it quickly gets rid of the zits and white heads I may be dealing with. It also massively helps preventing them and helps fading any scars and hyperpigmentation I may have left. It is my secret weapon when it comes to clear, healthy skin and I just cannot recommend it enough – it’s a keeper. I have the oil for dehydrated skin but Clarins also have one for dry (here) and oily/combination (here).

I’ve said it before and I will say it again – if you buy one thing off my recommendations it has to be the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo + (here). It is just a life changer and I cannot imagine not having it in my skincare cabinet. I always struggle describing this as it is not your typical day or night cream and is more of a treatment cream that you put under your regular moisturizer. It is marketed as ‘corrective and Unclogging Anti-Imperfection Care that reduces the appearance of imperfections and purifies pores’. When I was having massive skin issues ‘thanks’ to the Laura Mercier Silk Crème Foundation (here), Effaclar Duo came to the recue and completely cleared out my skin. It literally sorted everything out in two days and I have been using it religiously ever since. It works a brilliant job at declogging my pores, preventing my skin from breaking out and effectively healing any spots I may experience. It battles the black and white heads and at this point they are almost non-existent, which is incredible. At times when I am having skin issues I just use a tiny amount on my affected areas after I’ve gone over with the Clarins oil. I use it as spot treatment and the results are fantastic. In the morning, if I still have some redness left I apply the cream all over my face and it instantly calms everything down and I can go out the house feeling as confident as ever. Simples.

So ladies, these are my top three miracle workers that I always reach for when my skin is feeling a bit crazy. Using this three in conjunction pretty much sorts everything out and in the morning my breakouts are usually nowhere to be seen. I really hope you found this post helpful and don’t forget to let me know which is your trusty ‘breakout fighter’.

Lots of love,

  1. I find drinking water helps my skin massivley! It just gets so dry and dull when I slack with my water drinking. x

  2. Great tips! The major thing I struggle with is exercise I just can't get myself motivated! I wish I have someone to go running with as I just don't feel comfortable going by myself. I try and walk as much as I can and drink plenty of water which I have to keep reminding myself too! xoxox

  3. I loved Effaclar duo, I used one tube and never had to buy it again, it worked and solved my skin and I've never looked back. Scars from acne gone and no reoccurring acne, I'm so so happy that it worked! A treatment oils sounds interesting, I find so many can break me out!

  4. I just need to mention that skin cannot "breathe". I know this has to be some sort of figure of speech, but it just doesn't make any sense. The "breathe" thing has been debunked - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2B9qPJ5p7s&list=UUpDiPpQnuLNLaMIP-ODybfA

I've been struggling with millia or congestion on my forehead and I've been researching better skincare, which includes reading the back of the label (the ingredients list) and not the front of the label. Too many companies adding alcohol, fragrance, and other irritants that aren't good for the skin and saying it is. Learning about the science behind the makeup will go a lot more of a longer way than what's on the front label.

  5. la roche posay is my hg!

  6. Great tips! I used to use effaclar. Good cream!

  7. Water is so simple yet so crucial. When I'm hydrated my eyes aren't puffy and my skin looks bright, but when I've neglected it it definitely shows. I really want to try this version of the Glam Glow but I haven't been able to find it, only the original.

  8. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo + is now next on my Must Purchase list and great tips, thank you!

  9. I'm with you on the drinking loads of water, I force down at least 2 litres a day and I can almost hear my skin thanking me for it! My all time favourite spot treatment has to be Grease Lightning by Lush - it's so natural, won't ever dry out the skin surrounding the blemish and has helped incredibly with any scarring left over. It's a lifesaver! xx

  10. I'm with you on the LRP Effaclar Duo - it lives up to the hype completely! I turn to similar products - I use the Elemental Herbology Facial Detox Mask and the Antipodes Divine Face Oil, both fab products! Loooooove the sound of the Glam Glow mask, will have to check it out xx

  11. I've been having terrible skin lately. will def. take your advice on some of these products as lately I have no idea what to do and none of my favs are doing any wonders! thanks for the recommendations! xx. gigi. www.gigikkitchen.com

  12. Breakouts are a constant daily struggle for me so it was interesting to see what works for you. The LRP Effaclar Duo seems to be popping up in a lot of people's treatment regime so it must be good. I really like the Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion for those cystic pimples.

  13. My skin is far, far away from being perfect but changing my diet helped me tremendously! I cut out most of the dairy products and my cystic acne just went away. It's such a great feeling to have semi-normal looking skin, haha :)

I love the Supermud Clearing Mask, quite pricey but definitely worth it. I don't believe I've ever tried Clarins skincare products and this oil sounds so lovely! The fact that it fights post-acne marks is definitely a huge plus! Gotta love those products that do a great job at multi-tasking!
